Fishing Activity Affected Odontocete Cetacean Distribution in a Marine Protected Area in the East China Sea

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Spatiotemporal distribution of odontocete cetaceans within China's Jiushan Archipelago National Nature Reserve was investigated. Fishing vessels significantly reduced both cetacean acoustic detections and feeding activity, whereas gillnets selectively suppressed cetacean feeding behavior without affecting overall cetacean detection rates.

Contrasting Responses of Rodents With Different Habitat Associations to Rapid Urbanization in a Chinese Megacity

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Rapid urbanization reshaped rodent populations, morphology, and gut microbiota along an urban–rural gradient. The synanthropic rat (Rattus norvegicus) increased in abundance toward the urban core and exhibited reduced ear and tail length, whereas the farmland mouse (Apodemus agrarius) and woodland rat (Niviventer confucianus) declined.

Nocturnal Behavior of Wintering Common Cranes (Grus grus) Under Varying Environmental Conditions

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
For diurnal species, nighttime represents a critical ecological boundary. Understanding the ecological determinants of nocturnal activity in taxa traditionally regarded as inactive after dusk is essential for elucidating the adaptive significance of nighttime behavior. We examined how night phase, nocturnal brightness (moon illumination and cloud cover)

Cumulative Duration and Habitat Selection Across the Annual‐Cycle Stages: Links to Human Modification in Two Declining Shorebirds

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
First multi‐season analysis linking cumulative duration and habitat selection to human modification in two declining shorebirds. A total of 160 cumulative duration was identified at four periods for two species. Longer cumulative duration correlate with higher human modification in coastal wetlands during northward migration and winter.

Metabarcoding replicate detection frequency tracks ddPCR copy number for cod and herring eDNA in ancient marine sediments

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Detecting environmental DNA (eDNA) from rare or low‐abundance aquatic species remains a major challenge, particularly when it is highly degraded, present at low concentrations, and dominated by DNA from non‐target taxa. These challenges are further amplified in sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) studies, where thousands of years can degrade ...

A validated 3D point‐cloud analysis workflow for the creation of seagrass canopy height models

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Seagrasses support highly productive ecosystems in both temperate and tropical waters and provide essential ecosystem services. Despite their importance, the vertical structure of seagrasses (i.e. the canopy) remains poorly characterised at the microscale, even though it is a strong predictor of ecological processes that influence both ...

From fluke to fragment: A multifaceted method for molecular sex identification and mitochondrial haplotyping from environmental DNA samples

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses have become a powerful tool for non‐invasive biodiversity monitoring, yet the applicability of population‐genetic approaches to environmental samples remains largely unexplored. Even when genetic traces originate from a single individual, low target DNA concentrations and amplification or sequencing artefacts ...

Bacpipe: A Python package to make bioacoustic deep learning models accessible

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Natural sounds have been recorded for millions of hours over the previous decades using passive acoustic monitoring. Improvements in deep learning models have vastly accelerated the analysis of large portions of this data. While new models advance the state‐of‐the‐art, accessing them using tools to harness their full potential is not always ...
