Abstract To evaluate the meaning of isolated antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti‐HBc), 88 Chinese subjects with isolated anti‐HBc received rescreening of hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers. Eighty (90.9%) of them were still positive for this antibody and 29 were also found to be positive for antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti‐HBs).

Reported here is a case of double hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in an HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patient with antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen as the only serological marker (anti-HBc alone). Two different HBV genotypes were identified in this patient.

[Occult HBV infection in patients with anti-HBc positive alone].
Zhonghua shi yan he lin chuang bing du xue za zhi = Zhonghua shiyan he linchuang bingduxue zazhi = Chinese journal of experimental and clinical virology, 2011This study was designed to explore the incidence rate of occult HBV infection in patients with anti-HBc positive alone and analyze the possible reasons of occult infection.Sera of 183 patients carrying anti-HBc alone(A < or = 0.1) were collected and real-time PCR was used to select samples with HBV DNA positive.

Prevalence of Ac Anti-Hbc Alone Among Pregnant Women at the Yaounde University Teaching Hospital
American Journal of Nursing and Health SciencesIntroduction: Infection with the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major public health issue; however, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are the most affected regions. Occult hepatitis B Infection (OBI) refers to the presence of HBV DNA in the serum and/or liver of a patient despite negative HBsAg.

The immunological finding "anti-HBc alone" (without HBsAg, without anti-HBs) leaves open the question of the state of HBV infection it reflects: a transitory stage of an uncomplicated, eventually prolonged but resolving infection, a chronic or a late state of immunity.

The "anti-HBc alone" serological profile is a frequent finding in hepatitis B virus infections, but little is known about its clinical significance. The aim of this study was to explore the 'anti-HBc alone' serological profile obtained by immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 284 patients suspicious of being infected with hepatitis B virus. Sera were screened

High levels of serum hepatitis B virus DNA in patients with 'anti-HBc alone': role of HBsAg mutants.
Journal of viral hepatitis, 2012It remains unclear how the detection of hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) in the absence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibody (anti-HBs) should be interpreted and whether all patients with this pattern need to be tested for hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA.
