Mechanisms of antioxidant action: polymer grafted antioxidants

European Polymer Journal, 1974
Abstract It is shown that the antioxidant 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl acrylate, may be grafted to the surface of polymer artefacts. The antioxidant activity of the resulting “efficiently dispersed” antioxidant is very much higher than that of low molecular weight antioxidants containing the same functional group.

The Mechanism of the Action of Antioxidants and the Synergism of Mixed Antioxidants

Russian Chemical Reviews, 1970
The review considers the mechanism by which various types of inhibitors act in the oxidation processes of carbochain polymers and also mixtures of inhibitors exhibiting a synergistic effect. In conclusion a new and promising class of stabilisers (polyfunctional inhibitors) is considered. The bibliography includes 85 references.

Quantum mechanical study of antioxidative ability and antioxidative mechanism of rutin (vitamin P) in solution

Carbohydrate Research, 2011
A quantum mechanical approach has been used to shed light on the antioxidative mechanism for scavenging hydroxyl radicals (()OH) and superoxide radicals (O2-) by rutin in the solution phase. Density-functional theory (DFT) using B(3)LYP and UB(3)LYP functional and split-valance 6-311+G(∗∗) basis sets were used to optimize rutin and its different ...

The influence of pH on antioxidant properties and the mechanism of antioxidant action of hydroxyflavones

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2001
The effect of the pH on antioxidant properties of a series of hydroxyflavones was investigated. The pKa of the individual hydroxyl moieties in the hydroxyflavones was compared to computer-calculated deprotonation energies. This resulted in a quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR), which enables the estimation of pKa values of individual ...

Antioxidative mechanism in the course of varicose veins

Phlebology: The Journal of Venous Disease, 2017
ObjectiveOur objective was to evaluate the state of oxidative stress in the great saphenous varicose vein wall and blood of varicose vein patients taken from the antecubital vein.MethodsThe superoxide dismutase, reduced glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant status were measured with commercially available colorimetric kits in erythrocytes, plasma and

Antioxidant Defense Mechanisms

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive molecules generated as a byproduct of normal metabolism and through exposure to external factors, such as radiation, pollutants, and certain medications. Overproduction of ROS leads to oxidative stress.

Mechanisms of Antioxidant Action

1998
Oxidative stress can be viewed as the disturbance in the oxidant—antioxidant balance in favor of the former (Sies, 1985). Over the years, the research disciplines interested in oxidative stress have been growing steadfastedly, thus increasing our knowledge of the importance of the cell redox status and aiding at the recognition of oxidative stress as a
