The Influence of Host Plant Extrafloral Nectaries on Multitrophic Interactions: An Experimental Investigation. [PDF]
A field experiment was conducted with outplantings of the native perennial shrub Senna mexicana var. chapmanii in a semi-natural area adjacent to native pine rockland habitat in southern Florida.

Patient‐specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be differentiated into alveolar type II cells (iAT2s), expanded as 3D alveolospheres, and grown at physiologically relevant air–liquid interface (ALI). This study shows for the first time the infectability of iAT2s by the influenza A virus (IAV) and proves their responsiveness to the well ...

Caterpillars and fungal pathogens: two co-occurring parasites of an ant-plant mutualism [PDF]
In mutualisms, each interacting species obtains resources from its partner that it would obtain less efficiently if alone, and so derives a net fitness benefit.

Microfluidic Modeling of Macrophage‐Induced Cardiac Inflammation Using NF‐κB Reporter Cardiomyocytes
A cardiac inflammation model was developed to enable real‐time analysis of macrophage‐cardiomyocyte interactions using NF‐κB‐reporter cardiomyocytes and a microfluidic co‐culture system. A MATLAB‐based model was implemented to optimize cell density and medium resupply based on TNFα diffusion kinetics. Activation thresholds and stress responses in NF‐κB‐

BackgroundForaging workers of grass-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri) regularly carry grass fragments larger than their own body. Fragment length has been shown to influence the ants' running speed and thereby the colony's food intake rate.

Sanitizing the fortress: protection of ant brood and nest material by worker antibiotics [PDF]
Social groups are at particular risk for parasite infection, which is heightened in eusocial insects by the low genetic diversity of individuals within a colony. To combat this, adult ants have evolved a suite of defenses to protect each other, including
