There are now five anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) drugs licenced for use in rheumatoid arthritis. This chapter examines the similarities and differences between the drugs and looks for clues with regard to their rational prescribing. The major difference is between the monoclonal antibody-based drugs and the soluble receptor etanercept.

Abstract: Whenever serum estrogen concentrations are normal in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, lower androgen concentrations (i.e., testosterone, androstenedione, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate [DHEAS]) are detected in the serum as well as in the synovial fluid of male and female RA patients.

Anti-TNFs in axial spondyloarthritis
Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift, 2015Since there is no evidence regarding the efficacy of conventional synthetic disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs in the improvement of axial spondyloarthritis (SpA), anti-tumor necrosis factors (anti-TNFs) are recommended if nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs fail, or in case of high disease activity.
