Morphogenesis of human aortic coarctation
Experimental and Molecular Pathology, 1967Abstract The congenital medial lesion of sortic coarctation was studied by light and electron microscopy. In aortas of young infants prominent morphological features of this lesion were interstitial edema, increased ground substance and proliferation of poorly differentiated smooth muscle cells.

Reoperation for recurrent aortic coarctation
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1995Recurrence of stenosis is a complication of coarctation repair associated with major long-term morbidity. Persistent or exercise-provoked hypertension may indicate recurrent coarctation. Patients failing or not amenable to balloon dilation should be managed surgically.A retrospective chart review was performed.Forty-three patients were identified as ...

Aortic coarctation consists of a constriction of the aortic arch that causes some degree of aortic arch hypoplasia. The suspicion of coarctation of the aorta must be raised in the presence of a discrepancy in the size of the left heart. However, the false-positive rate is high. There is a high risk for associated anomalies, particularly for cardiac and

An infrarenal abdominal aortic coarctation
Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, 2004We describe a case of infrarenal abdominal coarctation in a 44-year-old woman who presented with severe uncontrolled hypertension. She had no signs of lower limb ischemia with normal distal pulses. Electron beam tomography revealed abdominal aortic coarctation extending from the superior mesenteric artery to the inferior mesenteric artery with a ...

Results of stenting for aortic coarctation
The American Journal of Cardiology, 2001Thisstudy reports the results obtained with stent implanta-tion in young and adult patients with AC.•••Between September 1996 and August 2000, 56stents were implanted in 54 patients with AC (35male, 19 female; age range 8 to 49 years, mean 22 69). AC was defined as a stenosis with a peak-to-peakgradient of $20 mm Hg at rest.

The first surgical repair of aortic coarctation was performed in 1944 [1]. Since then three basic surgical methods have evolved for repair of classic short-segment aortic coarctation (CoAo): resection of the coarcted segment with end-to-end anastomosis (Fig.

Repair of neonatal aortic coarctation
Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1995From 1981 to 1991, 146 infants under 1 month of age underwent repair of aortic coarctation. Forty-two had isolated coarctation, 53 had associated ventricular septal defect, and 51 had complex cardiac defects. The principal mode of presentation was congestive heart failure. The mean age at operation was 10.6 days.

Experimental aortic coarctation in puppies
Journal of Surgical Research, 1982Coarctation was produced in nine puppies at the age of 2 months with a simple silk ligature on the thoracic aorta. The constriction was standardized by measuring the blood pressure below the coarctation. Two of the operated puppies died. Five puppies were sham operated and they served as a control group.

Endovascular stenting for aortic coarctation
Expert Review of Cardiovascular Therapy, 2005Surgery had been the traditional treatment for native coarctation of the aorta, one of the most common cardiovascular congenital malformations. As a less invasive mode of treatment, balloon angioplasty has emerged as an alternative to surgery but has not gained universal acceptance due to its rates of restenosis secondary to vessel recoil and concerns ...

Endovascular management of aortic coarctation
International Journal of Cardiology, 2004Surgical repair has a dramatic impact on the prognosis of aortic coarctation. However, in many units, endovascular repair by balloon angioplasty or stenting has become the primary treatment. Short-term results are excellent but there are few data on later outcome.
