Aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm surgery
Current Opinion in Cardiology, 1994During the last year, the role of noninvasive studies for aortic dissection--magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography scanning, and transesophageal echocardiography--has become better defined. Both magnetic resonance imaging and transesophageal echocardiography are highly accurate in detecting aortic dissection.

Aortic aneurysms have been recognized since at least the 2nd century. However, little progress in their treatment was made until the early 1800s, when surgical ligation of these lesions sometimes proved successful. Until the mid 20th century, the most widespread approach was indirect treatment to provide palliation and prevent rupture.

Advances in aortic arch surgery
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1992From 1980 to January 1991, 130 patients (89 men and 41 women, aged 22 to 76 years; mean age, 52 years) underwent 133 interventions on the aortic arch. Aneurysm was diagnosed in 57 patients, whereas 29 had chronic and 44 acute aortic dissection. In 67 instances a partial and in 35 instances a total arch replacement was performed.
