Aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm surgery
Current Opinion in Cardiology, 1994During the last year, the role of noninvasive studies for aortic dissection--magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography scanning, and transesophageal echocardiography--has become better defined. Both magnetic resonance imaging and transesophageal echocardiography are highly accurate in detecting aortic dissection.

Aortic aneurysms have been recognized since at least the 2nd century. However, little progress in their treatment was made until the early 1800s, when surgical ligation of these lesions sometimes proved successful. Until the mid 20th century, the most widespread approach was indirect treatment to provide palliation and prevent rupture.

Surgery for Diseases of the Aortic Root
Cardiology Clinics, 2017The aortic root is the junction between the heart and aorta, containing the aortic valve and the coronary artery ostia. Various pathologic conditions arise in this region requiring complex surgical correction. These include aneurysmal dilatation with and without aortic regurgitation, acute aortic dissection extending below the sinotubular junction, and

A History of Thoracic Aortic Surgery
Cardiology Clinics, 2017Ancient historical texts describe the presence of aortic pathology conditions, although the surgical treatment of thoracic aortic disease remained insurmountable until the 19th century. Surgical treatment of thoracic aortic disease then progressed along with advances in surgical technique, conduit production, cardiopulmonary bypass, and endovascular ...

Neurologic complications of aortic diseases and aortic surgery
2014Aortic disease processes have a wide range of clinical manifestations. The inflammatory disease process of Takayasu's arteritis differs dramatically from the visceral ischemia of aortic dissection. The catastrophic event of aortic rupture tends to overshadow life-altering events such as stroke and paraplegia. However, these neurologic manifestations of

Advances in aortic arch surgery
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1992From 1980 to January 1991, 130 patients (89 men and 41 women, aged 22 to 76 years; mean age, 52 years) underwent 133 interventions on the aortic arch. Aneurysm was diagnosed in 57 patients, whereas 29 had chronic and 44 acute aortic dissection. In 67 instances a partial and in 35 instances a total arch replacement was performed.

Aortic surgery, coarctation of the aorta, and aortic dissection
Current Opinion in Cardiology, 1993During the past year, significant advances were made in the insertion of composite valve grafts for the ascending aorta, replacement of the aortic arch, treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, and in the screening of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms for cardiac disease.
