There have been several significant advances in our understanding of aortic valve disease over the past year. Recent studies suggest that "degenerative" valvular aortic stenosis is an active disease process rather than an inevitable consequence of aging.

Aortic valve replacement for quadricuspid aortic valve incompetence.
The Journal of heart valve disease, 1998Quadricuspid aortic valve is an uncommon cause of aortic regurgitation. We report two patients who underwent aortic valve replacement because of severe aortic incompetence; the presence of a quadricuspid aortic valve was an accidental surgical finding.

Calcific aortic stenosis (AS) is primarily a disease of the elderly, possessing features that are biomechanical as well as systemic and inflammatory in nature, with risk factors and histopathology similar to atherosclerosis. To date no medical therapy has been shown to conclusively alter the progression of the disease, and for those with symptomatic AS,

Myxoma of the aortic valve is exceedingly uncommon. In this article, we report a 58-year-old man with myxoma arising from the aortic valve. Aortic valve replacement was performed, and postoperative histologic examination showed myxoma of aortic valve.

Management of aortic valve disease follows traditional algorithms: initial gross diagnosis, noninvasive imaging and quantitation, possible catheterization or angiography, and medical treatment until symptoms of prognosis prediction indicates surgery. Most advances in this subject reflect improved technology and additional data collection therefrom, and

A detailed 2-D echocardiographic examination of the aortic valve is an important first step for evaluation of aortic valve disease. Transvalvular velocity and pressure gradients estimated from a continuous wave Doppler envelope directed through the aortic valve, planimetry of the aortic valve orifice, and/or a valve area estimation by the continuity ...
