There have been dramatic changes in the incidence of valve disease over the past decade. With the decline of rheumatic fever, the incidence of rheumatic heart disease has been reduced. In contrast, people now live a lot longer than 10–20 years ago, which has led to the increase of degenerative valve disease and in particular aortic stenosis.
