The only effective treatment of an aortocaval fistula is the surgical closure of the fistula opening with insertion of an aortic prosthesis to restore the arterial continuity. The diagnosis of this distinct but infrequent clinical entity is often missed because of lack of suspicion.

Diagnosis of Aortocaval Fistula by Computed Tomography
Annals of Vascular Surgery, 1998A case of an aortocaval fistula documented by contrast-enhancement computed tomography is reported. In the presence of a large abdominal aortic aneurysm, the computed tomography (CT) triad findings of: (1) vena caval effacement, (2) loss of the fat plane between the aorta and vena cava, and (3) rapid flow of contrast from the aorta into a dilated ...

Presentation and Treatment of Spontaneous Aortocaval Fistula
Southern Medical Journal, 1997Spontaneous rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysm into the inferior vena cava is rare. The clinical presentation is highly variable, and the diagnosis can be difficult, often being made only at operation. The aortocaval fistula results in a large left-to-right shunt, which can cause cardiac failure.

Endocaval suture of aortocaval fistula.
The American surgeon, 1996A case of aortocaval fistula complicating a ruptured infrarenal aortic aneurysm is reported. As the length of the defect and the thickness of the aortic wall made repair from within the aorta unsafe, the defect was repaired from within the vena cava. The details of the technique are reported.

[Traumatic aortocaval fistula].
Harefuah, 2000Arterio-venous fistula is a relatively rare form of vascular injury. A case of an unusual fistula between aorta and inferior vena cava is presented. Occasionally this type of injury is difficult to diagnose early. Life-threatening conditions may mandate prompt treatment and the use of damage control strategy.

Spontaneous aortocaval fistulas.
British journal of hospital medicine, 1988An aortocaval fistula is an uncommon complication of an abdominal aortic aneurysm and occurs in approximately 1-3% of cases. Successful surgical intervention is dependent upon a preoperative diagnosis and subsequent modification of surgical technique.
