Adiponectin levels in captive Owl Monkeys (Aotus sp.)
Journal of Medical Primatology, 2023AbstractThe mean serum value of adiponectin in captive Aotus sp. is 541.99 ng/mL ± 73.05. There is no influence of sex or age, but there is a moderate positive correlation between body weight and adiponectin levels in males.

Asymmetric dimethyl arginine in captive owl monkeys (Aotus sp)
Journal of Medical Primatology, 2022AbstractOnly four of 40 animals had measurable asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) levels. The young primate had the lowest value (53.4 ng/ml) when compared with the two adults (218.8 ± 9.3 ng/ml) and the elderly one (320.5 ng/ml). The ADMA levels in this study may relate to the echocardiographic abnormalities found, and possible hypertensive ...

AbstractBackgroundThe cardiovascular system of owl monkeys has been studied due to frequent postmortem findings of heart disease in asymptomatic animals. The silent aspect and the difficulty of early diagnosis intensify the importance of studying the cardiovascular system in this species.MethodsEchocardiogram evaluation was carried out on 60 animals ...

Spontaneous cardiomyopathy and nephropathy in the owl monkey (Aotus sp.) in captivity
Journal of Medical Primatology, 1992Clinical and pathologic data were reviewed for 72 owl monkeys that died between January 1987 and May 1990 at the Center for Reproduction and Conservation of Nonhuman Primates in Iquitos, Peru. Tissue samples from 39 animals were examined. Hypertrophic cardiac disease (51% of animals examined), dilative cardiomyopathy (26%), and nephropathy (87%) were ...

AbstractBackground Three methods of body temperature measurement were compared in owl monkeys: non‐contact infrared thermometry, subcutaneous transponder, and rectal probe. Methods Forty owl monkeys (Aotus sp.) were used. Animals were implanted with subcutaneous microchip transponders. Infrared thermometry was used at three different sites.

Abstract: An apparently normal, non‐tuberculin‐reacting, splenectomized owl monkey presented tuberculosis‐like lesions of the lung at necropsy. Histological and bacteriological examination failed to demonstrate the presence of acid‐fast organisms. Retrospective inquiry showed the animal had been inoculated using complete Freund's Adjuvant during a ...

Dipetalonema barbascalensis sp. n. recovered from the abdominal cavity of owl monkeys, Aotus trivirgatus, from Colombia is described. This filarioid belongs to the "Tetrapetalonema" group and most closely resembles the nematode previously known as Parlitomosa zakii Nagaty, 1935, from the pectoral muscles of a Brazilian marmoset.
