The poor impermeability of fractured rock induced by excavation and construction is improved through the application of microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP), but it is difficult to monitor and evaluate the permeability reduction under a ...

Simulation studies of space-charge-dominated beam transport in large-aperture ratio quadrupoles [PDF]
For many cases of interest in the design of heavy-ion fusion accelerators, the maximum transportable current in a magnetic quadrupole lattice scales as (a/L)/sup 2/ where a is the useful dynamic aperture and L is the half-lattice period. There are many cost benefits to maximizing the usable aperture which must be balanced against unwanted effects such ...

The Structure of High Strehl Ratio Point-Spread Functions
We describe the symmetries present in the point-spread function (PSF) of an optical system either located in space or corrected by an adaptive o to Strehl ratios of about 70% and higher.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey: The Cosmic Spectrum and Star-Formation History [PDF]
We present a determination of the `Cosmic Optical Spectrum' of the Universe, i.e. the ensemble emission from galaxies, as determined from the red-selected Sloan Digital Sky Survey main galaxy sample and compare with previous results of the blue-selected ...

Controlled laser‐drilling of embedded HfO2 membranes creates three layer nanopores with Gaussian‐shaped cavities sculptured in the supporting layers. These embedded solid‐state nanopores slow DNA translocation by 12‐fold compared to SiNx pores, enabling high‐resolution, label‐free detection of short DNAs, RNAs, and proteins.

Spectral Classification of Galaxies Along the Hubble Sequence [PDF]
We develop a straightforward and quantitative two-step method for spectroscopically classifying galaxies from the low signal-to-noise (S/N) optical spectra typical of galaxy redshift surveys. First, using \chi^2-fitting of characteristic templates to the

Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

Comparative study on absorbing characteristics of aperture-type and patch-type FSS
Aperture-type and patch-type frequency selective surfaces (FSS) were prepared by using carbon fiber paper containing carbon fiber. Using honeycomb as the matching dielectric layer, microscopic characterization of carbon fiber distribution in carbon fiber
