Ray-tracing and physical-optics analysis of the aperture efficiency in a radio telescope

open access: yes, 2007
The performance of telescope systems working at microwave or visible/IR wavelengths is typically described in terms of different parameters according to the wavelength range.

Three‐dimensional Antimony Sulfide Based Flat Optics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents the development of a grayscale electron beam lithography (g‐EBL) method for fabricating antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3) nanostructures with customizable 3D profiles. The refractive index of g‐EBL patterned Sb2S3 is determined based on the synergy of genetic algorithm and transfer matrix method.

Influence of Grid Aperture Ratio on Electron Transmittance and Electron Beam Spot Size in Field Emission Processes of Carbon Nanotubes

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Field emission is an important work mode for electron sources, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been extensively studied for their good emission properties.

Merging galaxies produce outliers from the Fundamental Metallicity Relation

open access: yes, 2015
From a large sample of $\approx 170,000$ local SDSS galaxies, we find that the Fundamental Metallicity Relation (FMR) has an overabundance of outliers, compared to what would be expected from a Gaussian distribution of residuals, with significantly lower

From Waste to Value: Conversion of Calcium Sulfate to Vaterite via Carbon Capture and Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new concept for carbon management that relies on the carbonation of industrial gypsum waste and yields phase‐pure vaterite at ambient conditions without any additives. The obtained vaterite is further shown to be a reactive material that develops compressive strength in aqueous suspensions like conventional cements.

Simulation of Water Entry Jet and Cavitation Characteristics of Hollow Projectiles

open access: yes水下无人系统学报
In the water entry process of hollow projectiles, the formation of high-speed water jets is a crucial factor influencing their water entry. In order to study the influence of the through-hole aperture of hollow projectiles on jet and water entry ...

Device for measuring the contour of a surface [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
Light from a source is imaged by a lens onto a surface so that the energy from the source is concentrated into a spot. As the spot across the surface is scanned, the surface moves relative to the point of perfect focus.

Gram‐Scale Production of Iron Oxide Rubik‐Cube Nanoparticles: New Tools for the Clinical Translation of Magnetic Hyperthermia and Magnetic Particle Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work reports the first gram‐scale solvothermal synthesis of ‘Rubik's cube’ nanoparticles—cubic, dendritic multicore structures with tuneable sizes and exceptional magnetic heating performance. Featuring iron oxide single‐domain character, with low coercivity fields, high magnetization, and strong MPI signals, they enable viscosity‐independent ...

Axial ratio improvement in aperture antennas using high-impedance ground plane

open access: yesElectronics Letters, 2002
High-impedance surfaces are studied as a means of improving the radiation pattern symmetry in aperture antennas. Compared to a solid metal ground plane, the results suggest that high-impedance surfaces can significantly improve the axial ratio of circularly polarised antennas.

Searching for galaxy clusters using the aperture mass statistics in 50 VLT fields

open access: yes, 2005
Application of the aperture mass (Map-) statistics provides a weak lensing method for the detection of cluster-sized dark matter halos. We present a new aperture filter function and maximise the effectiveness of the Map-statistics to detect cluster-sized
