Halotolerant cyanobacterium Aphanothece halophytica contains a betaine transporter active at alkaline pH and high salinity. [PDF]

open access: yesAppl Environ Microbiol, 2006
ABSTRACT Aphanothece halophytica is a halotolerant alkaliphilic cyanobacterium which can grow in media of up to 3.0 M NaCl and pH 11. This cyanobacterium can synthesize betaine from glycine by three-step methylation using S -adenosylmethionine as a methyl donor.

Gliding motility in Aphanothece halophytica: analysis of wall proteins in mot mutants. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Bacteriol, 1981
The unicellular cyanobacterium Aphanothece halophytica (PCC 7418) is motile, and spontaneous nonmotile (mot) mutants accumulate when the organism is subcultured. Analysis of mot mutants suggests that a glycoprotein in the cell wall is involved in the motility mechanism.

Osmotic Adaptation and Compatible Solute Biosynthesis of Phototrophic Bacteria as Revealed from Genome Analyses [PDF]

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
Osmotic adaptation and accumulation of compatible solutes is a key process for life at high osmotic pressure and elevated salt concentrations. Most important solutes that can protect cell structures and metabolic processes at high salt concentrations are

Boundaries of photosynthesis: adaptations of carbon fixation in extreme environments [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 7, Page 1028-1040, July 2025.
Photosynthesis faces challenges from environmental extremes of temperature, pH, and salinity, limiting gas diffusion, modifying membrane fluidity, and destabilizing photochemical and biochemical reactions. Photosynthetic organisms have evolved unique adaptations overcoming these stresses and maintaining their photosynthetic activity.

Cultivo axênico das cianobactérias marinhas Aphanothece halophytica Frémy, 1933 e Chroococcus minutus (Kützing) Nägeli, 1849 Axenic culture of the sea cyanobacterias Aphanothece halophytica Frémy, 1933 and Chroococcus minutus (Kützing) Nägeli, 1849

The neuroprotective role of cyanobacteria with focus on the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential: Current status and perspectives [PDF]

open access: yesMolecules
Neurodegenerative diseases are linked to the process of neurodegeneration. This can be caused by several mechanisms, including inflammation and accumulation of reactive oxygen species.

Adaptive Responses of Cyanobacteria to Phosphate Limitation: A Focus on Marine Diazotrophs [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 12, December 2024.
Marine diazotrophic cyanobacteria, which are essential for atmospheric nitrogen fixation in low‐nutrient oceans, have developed various strategies to survive under phosphate (Pi) limitation by using high‐affinity transporters and enzymes that break down dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP).
