Plant immunity in plant–aphid interactions
Aphids are economically important pests that cause extensive feeding damage and transmit viruses. While some species have a broad host range and cause damage to a variety of crops, others are restricted to only closely related plant species.

Russian wheat aphid: a model for genomic plasticity and a challenge to breeders
Invasive foundress finds suitable habitat and reproduces through pathogenesis. Wingless females produce life offspring quickly, which leads to high population densities. High population densities result in competition, which may induce epigenetic changes and wing development for dispersal.

We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of the aphid Periphyllus koelreuteriae. It is 16,828 bp long and includes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosome RNA genes (rRNAs), a control region, and a repeat region.

The Mitochondrial Protein RESISTANCE to APHIDS 9 Interacts with S40 to Resist Aphid Infestation by Modulating Reactive Oxygen Species Homeostasis in Maize (Zea mays). [PDF]
This study identifies the mitochondrial protein RTA9, a member of the Domain of Unknown Function 641 family, together with its partner S40, as key regulators of aphid resistance in maize. RTA9 promotes S40 degradation and modulates reactive oxygen species accumulation.

MECHANORECEPTORS OF THE APHID LABIUM [PDF]
Morphological evidence is provided for a mechanoreceptive function of the labial tip receptors, as well as of two newly described receptors in the stylet groove. Electrophysiological tip recording techniques could not demonstrate a neural response due to chemical stimulation of the tip sensilla, the larger labial hairs or the stylet tips.

Hemipteran vectors of stylet‐borne plant viruses: Aphids lead the charge
Among all sap‐feeding hemipterans, aphids stand out by far as the most important vectors of noncirculative plant viruses. Compared to whiteflies and mealybugs, aphids’ highly specialized stylet anatomy and distinct feeding behaviors contribute, together with other features of their biology, to their remarkable efficiency in transmitting stylet‐borne ...
