Interactions between host plant quality and non‐consumptive predator effects on oviposition and larval behaviour of Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 148-159, May 2025.
Abstract The presence of predators can induce non‐consumptive effects on prey that result in subsequent changes to prey behaviour and defence. We investigate the interaction between top‐down non‐consumptive effects of various stages of the predator Coccinella septempunctata L.(Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) (larvae and adult) and bottom‐up effects of host ...

Cover crops dismantle keystone ant/aphid mutualisms to enhance insect pest suppression and weed biocontrol

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 294-303, May 2025.
Abstract Cover crops are multifunctional tools that mitigate environmental impacts of agriculture, enhance resilience to weather extremes and suppress weeds and arthropod pests. Cover crops provide non‐crop food and habitat resources that attract natural enemies of pests, but their outcomes for pest management are less clear in regions where keystone ...

Sexual calling behaviour, and the effects of immediate mating history and consexual presence in the seven‐spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 5, Page 393-402, May 2025.
To attract mates, several coleopteran taxa release volatile sex pheromones via a behaviour termed calling. We studied a postulated calling behaviour in the seven‐spot ladybird Coccinella septempunctata L. for the first time. We also investigated the effects of immediate mating history and the presence of conspecifics on calling behaviour.

Optimizing field collection and laboratory conservation of the parasitoid Trichomalus perfectus before release against the cabbage seedpod weevil Ceutorhynchus obstrictus

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 5, Page 361-375, May 2025.
This study aimed to optimize Trichomalus perfectus (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) parasitoid field collection (sampling methods, local, and landscape scale analysis) and laboratory conservation before field release against Ceutorhynchus obstrictus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

From nature to nurture: Shifts in the gut microbiota of the brown marmorated stink bug under laboratory rearing conditions

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 5, Page 435-441, May 2025.
The gut microbiota composition of the invasive pest species Halyomorpha halys was compared between individuals collected in the field and reared in the laboratory based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Alpha and beta diversity change significantly from field‐collected to laboratory‐reared individuals and continue to change over the different generations of
