Brazilian Biomes as Promising Resources of Rhodotorula Yeasts for the Biotechnological Production of Carotenoids

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Yeasts belonging to the genus Rhodotorula are capable of synthesizing carotenoids, such as β‐carotene, γ‐carotene, torulene, torularodine, and astaxanthin. These carotenoids have been shown to offer health benefits to humans, such as immune system strengthening and a reduced risk of chronic degenerative diseases.

Plant Genes Benefitting Aphids—Potential for Exploitation in Resistance Breeding

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Aphids are phloem sap-feeding insects common as pests in various crops. Here we review 62 omics studies of aphid/plant interactions to search for indications of how aphids may manipulate the plants to make them more suitable as hosts, i.e.

Parasitism, Adult Emergence, Sex Ratio, and Size of \u3ci\u3eAphidius Colemani\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) on Several Aphid Species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Aphidius colemani Viereck parasitizes several economically important aphid pests of small grain crops including the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum and the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia. The ability of A. colemani to switch from S.

Combined effects of temperature change and natural habitat on the abundance of arthropod trait syndromes in agroecosystems

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Land‐use changes and climatic changes are two entwined stressors on ecosystems. Studies on such interactions often focus on species‐level or region‐specific responses, but fewer have examined differences in responses based on functional traits. Here we examine the influence of natural habitat cover and temperature change on the abundance of all ...

Resist!: Sustaining forest carbon sequestration and wood production after insect disturbance

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, EarlyView.
Disturbances from insect pests threaten ecologically and economically important goods and services supplied by forests, including wood production and carbon sequestration. We highlight the factors that influence these services’ resistance, a term quantifying the initial response to disturbance.

Maize resistance to insect herbivory is enhanced by silencing expression of genes for jasmonate‐isoleucine degradation using sugarcane mosaic virus

open access: yesPlant Direct, 2022
Previously, sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) was developed as a vector for transient expression of heterologous genes in Zea mays (maize). Here, we show that SCMV can also be applied for virus‐induced gene silencing (VIGS) of endogenous maize genes ...
