Reduced fertilization regimes could boost biocontrol service without reducing crop yield

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Fertilization level influences pest control effectiveness in tomato crops. High fertilization increases plant growth and aphid density but reduces the performance of the parasitoid Aphidius ervi. In contrast, the predator Adalia bipunctata maintains consistent aphid suppression regardless of fertilization regime.

Cereal aphids (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea) in Serbia: Seasonal dynamics and natural enemies

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2008
During 1989-2006 the number of live aphid, mummies, aphid specialist predators and their parasitoids in cereal fields in Serbia were recorded. S. avenae and M. dirhodum were the most common, both on wheat and rye crops.

A STUDY OF ARTIFICIAL DIET ON THE PARASITE ACTIVITY Aphidius transcaspicus (Telenga) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) [PDF]

open access: yesMesopotamia Journal of Agriculture, 2013
The effect of artificial diets mixtures on the parasitism efficiency of parasitoid adults on Green Peach aphis Myzus persicae and its effect on life-span of adults female was also tested in laboratory .Result showed that the mixture (haemolymph and water)

Impact of Host and Food Availability on Life‐History Traits in Six Egg Parasitoid Species of the Genus Trichogramma

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
In this study we measured the impact of access to sugar and hosts on the longevity and fecundity of six Trichogramma species: T. cacoeciae, T. chilonis, T. minutum, T. leptoparameron, T. pintoi and T. sibericum. The impact of food differed among species, but there was a general tendency of increased life expectancy and potential fecundity with sugar ...

Two new aphid parasitoids (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Aphidiinae) from field crops of South America [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hymenoptera Research
During two seasons of field sampling in crop fields in Argentina, a total of 2,276 Aphidiinae specimens were collected using Malaise traps positioned in maize, soybean, and wheat fields.

The Effects of LED Daylength Extensions on the Daily Activity Patterns of a Greenhouse Biological Control Agent, Aphidius matricariae

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We used automated activity monitors to examine how light‐emitting diode illumination affects the daily locomotor activity of the parasitoid biocontrol agent Aphidius matricariae. We compared 4‐ to 20 h broad‐spectrum white (BSW) photoperiods, and 12 h BSW photoperiods extended with an additional 6 h of red‐blue, red‐green‐blue, or BSW light, or no ...

Do aphid endosymbiotic bacteria influence parasitoid searching behaviour through changes in aphid honeydew production?

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Hamiltonella defensa infection increases honeydew production in certain aphid genotypes, potentially modifying aphid feeding behaviour. Parasitoid wasps, Aphidius ervi, are more attracted to honeydew from H. defensa‐infected aphids; though larger honeydew amounts may slightly deter searching.
