Mirrors at the birth of Aphrodite [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Ophthalmology, 2003
The first reflecting telescope was invented in 1663 by James Gregory, but was never popularised because the mirrors were too difficult to manufacture at that time. A slight variation on the principle, the Newtonian telescope, was first recognised in 1672 by its namesake, and was a most dramatic step forward in the observation of the stars.

Sex differences in brain glucose metabolism and Alzheimer's disease risk and progression

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Sex differences are increasingly recognized as central to the biology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the mechanisms through which they shape brain metabolism and disease vulnerability remain incompletely understood. Brain glucose hypometabolism is a core hallmark of AD and emerges decades before clinical decline, but accumulating evidence ...

Geologically Recent Formation of Some Tesserae on Venus by Plains Deformation

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Tessera is a pervasively deformed terrain type on Venus generally interpreted as the oldest preserved material on the surface. Large expanses of this terrain type are typically elevated and have been hypothesized to be felsic, perhaps analogous to Earth's continents and even to date from an era with a more Earth‐like climate earlier in Venus ...

Norman and Nietzsche: The Political Project of Lindsay's The Magic Pudding

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Politics &History, Volume 72, Issue 2, Page 256-268, June 2026.
Australian artist and writer Norman Lindsay (1879–1969) wrote 11 novels and two children's books, one of which—The Magic Pudding first published in 1918—remains a national classic. This article argues that readers and critics have long misunderstood Lindsay's intention in writing this lengthy cartoon‐story about the adventures of Bunyip Bluegum in ...

Rooting Conifer Genetic Research: An Accessible and Efficient Transformation System

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 6, Page 4027-4040, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Conifers serve as the cornerstone of global forest ecosystems, yet their genetic transformation faces notorious challenges. To overcome the intrinsic resistance of conifer adventitious roots to Agrobacterium/Rhizobium‐mediated transformation, we systematically and iteratively engineered the binary vector by introducing chimeric Ri plasmid ...

Downscaling precipitation over High-mountain Asia using multi-fidelity Gaussian processes: improved estimates from ERA5 [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences
The rivers of High-mountain Asia provide freshwater to around 1.9 billion people. However, precipitation, the main driver of river flow, is still poorly understood due to limited in situ measurements in this area.

Can Biostimulants and Phytohormones Improve Early Growth, Biomass Allocation, and Photosynthesis in Miscanthus Plug Plants?

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, Volume 15, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
Application of biostimulants and phytohormones enhanced Miscanthus plug growth by increasing height, biomass, and photosynthetic efficiency. Treatments such as Liquid Ice and IAA improved early vigor and resource allocation, offering a scalable strategy to strengthen establishment and accelerate the deployment of Miscanthus for sustainable bioenergy ...

Brownotate, a Comprehensive Solution to Generate Protein Sequence Databases for Any Species

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, Volume 26, Issue 5, Page 13-26, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Proteomics is strengthening research in biology and the diversification of the model organisms studied is very promising for fully understanding the complexity of biological principles. However, the lack of protein sequence databases for many species is a major bottleneck.
