The Blind Spots of Aid Evaluation: Why Do Some Departments Capture Unintended Effects Better Than Others?

open access: yesJournal of International Development, Volume 38, Issue 6, Page 961-975, August 2026.
ABSTRACT This study examines why some evaluation agencies and departments of bilateral aid donors report more unintended effects than others. It does so by analysing Belgian, Dutch and German evaluation practices. Using a comparative political economy approach, it evaluates the rigour and independence vis‐à‐vis implementers of their systems.

The Impact of Grafted Larvae and Collection Day on Royal Jelly’s Production and Quality

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Royal jelly (RJ), a secretion from nurse bees, is a key factor in honeybee caste differentiation and a high-value product in apitherapy. Despite its economic and biological importance, factors affecting its yield and composition remain insufficient. This

A review of blue carbon credit projects' socio‐economic activities

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 8, Page 2748-2762, August 2026.
Abstract Coastal ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems (mangroves, seagrasses and saltmarshes) are critical for climate regulation and biodiversity, yet significant funding gaps persist in marine conservation. While blue carbon credits are increasingly used to bridge these gaps, concerns remain regarding their efficacy in delivering socio‐economic benefits.

Production and Quality Characteristics of Royal Jelly in Relation to Available Natural Food Resources

open access: yesResources
Royal jelly is a secretion produced from the hypopharyngeal glands of worker bees, which requires significant pollen reserves to stimulate gland secretion.

Omics Insights Into the Effects of Highbush Blueberry and Cranberry Crop Agroecosystems on Honey Bee Health and Physiology

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, Volume 26, Issue 8, Page 41-57, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are vital pollinators in fruit‐producing agroecosystems like highbush blueberry (HBB) and cranberry (CRA). However, their health is threatened by multiple interacting stressors, including pesticides, pathogens, and nutritional changes.

Hidden Microbiota Inhabiting in Pollen Reserves of Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) From Amazonas Region Revealed by DNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 4, August 2026.
DNA metabarcoding of honey bee pollen reserves from Amazonas region reveals that microbial communities are strongly shaped by their ecosystem. Despite high taxonomic turnover across different habitats, these microbiomes maintain stable, essential functions for pollinator health, though they remain highly vulnerable to habitat homogenization.

Sericulture Mechanization Poses New Challenges for Environmental Disinfection—Evaluating the Effects of Three Newly Introduced Disinfectants

open access: yesAgriEngineering
While conventional sericulture has developed effective disinfection methods, the increasing demand for silk and pupae is driving mechanization, potentially altering or introducing silkworm pathogens.

Unveiling the AcSirt2‐FOXO‐Mitophagy Axis: Insights Into Mitochondrial Quality Control and Delayed Aging in Apis cerana

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 8, August 2026.
Age‐related downregulation of AcSirt2 impairs mitochondrial homeostasis in old bees. AcSirt2‐mediated deacetylation of FOXO enhances transcriptional activity, upregulating antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT) and promoting PINK1/Parkin‐mediated mitophagy. This pathway facilitates autophagosome formation and clearance of damaged mitochondria, reducing ROS ...

The wild honeybee population of Europe is in decline: Evidence from monitoring studies

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 8, August 2026.
Studying the population trends of wild honeybees is possible when considering that managed and wild colonies form different subpopulations within regional honeybee metapopualtions. Abstract Populations of wild western honeybees (Apis mellifera) have been neglected because the species has been considered to consist of managed colonies only.

Small Language Models: A Systematic Review of Computational Trade‐Offs, Privacy Advantages and Deployment in Intelligent Systems

open access: yesExpert Systems, Volume 43, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT This systematic review synthesizes evidence from 68 studies, including peer‐reviewed journal articles, indexed conference/workshop proceedings and five remaining arXiv preprints published between 2022 and 2025, on small language models (SLMs) as computationally efficient alternatives to large language models (LLMs).
