Vertical transmission of honey bee viruses in a Belgian queen breeding program [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: The Member States of European Union are encouraged to improve the general conditions for the production and marketing of apicultural products. In Belgium, programmes on the restocking of honey bee hives have run for many years.

Insect floral visitors vary spatiotemporally and influence fruit production in mango orchards

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Native stingless bees (Tetragonula spp.) were the most abundant flower visitors in mango orchards, and their visitation sharply declined with distance from native vegetation. Hover flies and stingless bees showed complementary spatiotemporal visitation patterns, but hover flies could not fully offset pollination loss deeper in the orchard.

The Odorant-Binding Protein Gene obp11 Shows Different Spatiotemporal Roles in the Olfactory System of Apis mellifera ligustica and Apis cerana cerana

open access: yesSociobiology, 2014
Odorant-binding proteins participate in the olfactory system of the honeybee. Apis mellifera ligustica and Apis cerana cerana are species of honeybee that have different biologic functions.

Anti-Breast Cancer Activity on MCF-7 Cells of Melittin from Indonesia’s Apis cerana: An In Vitro Study

open access: yesAsian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, 2021
Objective: Breast cancer is the most common case of cancers. Apitheraphy has been traditionally used for abundance diseases. This study aims to evaluate and compare the anti-breast cancer activity of melittin from Indonesia’s Apic cerana as a potential ...

Bumble Bees and Honey Bees on Islands Harbour Reduced Viral Species Richness, Yet Honey Bee Populations Are Dominated by a Deformed Wing Virus Recombinant

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pollinators harbour diverse RNA viromes that play a vital role in their health. Yet, factors that shape viral communities are often unclear. The European honey bee (Apis mellifera) is experiencing a viral epidemic since the emergence of the parasitic mite Varroa destructor (varroa) introduced vector‐borne transmission, which has also been ...

Foraging behavior of major insect pollinators on pumpkin, Cucurbita moschata (Duch.ex Lam) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Foraging activity period of different honey bee species on C. moschata (C-1076) flowers at different day hours during August-September (2013) revealed that A. dorsata, A. mellifera, A. cerana and A. florea initiated their activity early in the morning at

Identification and antioxidant characterisation of thioredoxin-like1 from Apis cerana cerana [PDF]

open access: yesApidologie, 2012
Thioredoxins (Trxs) play a crucial role in maintaining redox homeostasis and protecting organisms against toxic reactive oxygen species. Compared with the well-studied Trxs in Mammalia, little is reported in insects. In this study, we isolated a Trx-like1 gene from Apis cerana cerana (AccTrx-like1), a single copy gene, and characterised its antioxidant

Transcriptome Profiling Reveals a Novel Mechanism of Antiviral Immunity Upon Sacbrood Virus Infection in Honey Bee Larvae (Apis cerana)

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
The honey bee is one of the most important pollinators in the agricultural system and is responsible for pollinating a third of all food we eat. Sacbrood virus (SBV) is a member of the virus family Iflaviridae and affects honey bee larvae and causes ...
