A SNP based high-density linkage map of Apis cerana reveals a high recombination rate similar to Apis mellifera. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BACKGROUND: The Eastern honey bee, Apis cerana Fabricius, is distributed in southern and eastern Asia, from India and China to Korea and Japan and southeast to the Moluccas.

Study on Floral Syndrome and Breeding System of an Endangered Species Rhododendron nymphaeoides

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
This study divided the flowering process of Rhododendron nymphaeoides into five periods and systematically investigated the floral traits, pollen morphology and viability, optimal solid media for in vitro pollen germination, storage temperature screening, pollen–ovule ratio and hybridization index, stigma receptivity, the effects of different ...

Global variation in honey bee (Apis mellifera) mating flight times

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 52, Issue 5, Page 830-843, December 2025.
ABSTRACT During the mating season, male (drone) honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) make daily flights to drone congregation areas (DCAs) for the purpose of mating with a virgin queen. The timing of these flights (drone flight period) varies between geographic regions. However, the spatial scale over which variation occurs and the mechanisms contributing to

Insect floral visitors vary spatiotemporally and influence fruit production in mango orchards

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 6, Page 1121-1136, December 2025.
Native stingless bees (Tetragonula spp.) were the most abundant flower visitors in mango orchards, and their visitation sharply declined with distance from native vegetation. Hover flies and stingless bees showed complementary spatiotemporal visitation patterns, but hover flies could not fully offset pollination loss deeper in the orchard.

Proximity to Natural Habitat Is Not Consistently Associated With Pollination Services in Tropical Smallholder Farms: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 12, December 2025.
We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis of 35 studies to examine the relationship between distance to natural habitat and pollinator abundance, species richness and crop fruit set in tropical smallholder farms. We found no consistent effects on abundance or fruit set, and only a slight, highly variable negative effect on pollinator richness,

Scanning electron microscopic studies on tongue of open-nesting honey bees Apis dorsata F. and Apis florea F. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Taste stimuli play vital role in the life of honey bees. Sensory structures observed on tongue of the honey bees with the help of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have become an important tool in analyzing honey bee biodiversity which offers an ...

Bumble Bees and Honey Bees on Islands Harbour Reduced Viral Species Richness, Yet Honey Bee Populations Are Dominated by a Deformed Wing Virus Recombinant

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 24, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Pollinators harbour diverse RNA viromes that play a vital role in their health. Yet, factors that shape viral communities are often unclear. The European honey bee (Apis mellifera) is experiencing a viral epidemic since the emergence of the parasitic mite Varroa destructor (varroa) introduced vector‐borne transmission, which has also been ...

Collating and validating indigenous and local knowledge to apply multiple knowledge systems to an environmental challenge: A case-study of pollinators in India [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
There is an important role for indigenous and local knowledge in a Multiple Evidence Base to make decisions about the use of biodiversity and its management. This is important both to ensure that the knowledge base is complete (comprising both scientific
