Assessing safeguards against the illegal wildlife trade on AI platforms

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract AI platforms, while offering many positive applications, also present new risks to society, including the facilitation of trade in threatened and illegal wildlife. Although these platforms employ safeguards to block harmful or criminal requests, studies show such protections are imperfect and can be easily bypassed.

Detection of trade in products derived from threatened species using machine learning and a smartphone application

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade remains a major conservation challenge and is increasingly shifting to online marketplaces where monitoring is difficult. To address this gap, we used real‐world images from online platforms, enforcement seizures, and market inspections to develop a deep‐learning object detection framework to identify ...

A systematic review of deforestation outcomes in potential other effective area‐based conservation measures across Latin America

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Recognizing conservation contributions from areas outside protected areas (PAs), including other effective area‐based conservation measures (OECMs), is increasingly central to meeting global biodiversity targets. However, little is known about which areas could qualify as OECMs and whether they support forest conservation.

Compliance in Regulatory Gray Areas: The Case of the Organic Seed Standard

open access: yesPolicy Studies Journal, Volume 54, Issue 4, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Adaptive regulations, designed to balance flexibility with accountability, can embed provisions that unintentionally leave room for firms to shirk on their responsibilities by exploiting flexibility. We call these provisions “regulatory gray areas,” and ask: how should we understand (non‐)compliance in adaptive regulatory settings?

Spatially asymmetric and temporally dynamic ecological responses to river barrier removal: A global meta‐analysis

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 10, October 2026.
Barrier removal initiates ecological recovery rather than delivering immediate restoration, with responses shaped by spatial context, initial conditions and time since removal. Monitoring should therefore extend beyond the first post‐removal year and, where feasible, continue for at least 5 years, particularly in downstream reaches, while incorporating
