Vitellin (VN) and vitellogenin (VG) profiles were analyzed in monogyne and polygyne colonies of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. Non-denaturing and SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) analyses indicated that the native VN was likely 350 kDa and comprised of two subunits in the molecular size range of 170-185 kDa.

Despite recent efforts, hypothesised phylogenetic relationships among apocritan wasps remain unresolved. In this study, molecular analyses were employed to analyse a dataset that included the 16S, the 28S and the COI genes of 87 apocritan representatives. Partial sequences of the 18S gene were also generated and added to this dataset.

Hymenoptera (Insecta) of Plummers Island, Maryland: Symphyta and Selected Families of Apocrita
Bulletin of the Biological Society of Washington, 2008ABSTRACT Ninety-one species of sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) are recorded for Plummers Island, Maryland. Records are from collections during the periods of 1902–1924, 1958–1972, and 2005. An estimated 97 species currently may occur on the Island. Indications are that species composition has changed through the years.

Data on flight parameters of apocritans of different size was obtained and analyzed. It was shown that reduction in body size leads to changes in wing loading and elongation, wingbeat frequency, stroke amplitude, and thrust. Our data could be useful for understanding of adaptive changes of insect flight in the course of miniaturization.
