Ecological and evolutionary implications of hybridization, polyploidy and apomixis in angiosperms

open access: yesBotan‪ical Sciences
Hybridization, polyploidy, and apomixis are related to the diversification of angiosperms, generating complex taxonomic relationships between species. Despite the differences in the frequencies of these phenomena, apomixis, the asexual seed production ...

Identification of a molecular marker linked to apomixis in Brachiaria humidicola (Poaceae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
A bulked segregant analysis using RAPD technique was carried out to identify molecular markers linked to apomixis in a Brachiaria humidicola F1 population that segregated 1 : 1 for the mode of reproduction (apomixis and sexual).

Induction of Synthetic Apomixis in Two Sorghum Hybrids Enables Seed Yield and Genotype Preservation Over Multiple Generations

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Induction of apomixis, or clonal reproduction through seed, could economise commercial hybrid seed production and enable smallholder farmers to save and sow hybrid seed. Here, we demonstrate the synthetic induction of apomixis in two sorghum hybrids and show that the clonal hybrid seed can be maintained across multiple seed generations.

Tetraploidisation is a common phenomenon in apomictic Citrus seedlings affected by genotype and environmental conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Citrus species are mainly diploid (2n=2x=18) and very few natural polyploid are encountered in the citrus gene pool. However, several reports of tetraploid seedlings occurrence from apomictic citrus have been done during the last century.

Evolution of plant reproduction: from fusion and dispersal to interaction and communication [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Based on the existing data concerning the evolution of the sexual reproduction, it is argued that the processes of sex differentiation and interactions play a key role in evolution. From the beginning environment and organism are unified.

Pro‐Vitamin A Biofortified Cavendish Banana: Trait Stability in the Field

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Vitamin A deficiency (VAD), a major global health concern, has driven efforts to develop staple crops with enhanced pro‐vitamin A (pVA) content. Delivering meaningful nutritional benefits, however, requires technologies that maintain elevated carotenoid levels under field conditions. Previous proof‐of‐concept work demonstrated that pVA content

Harnessing the developmental potential of nucellar cells: Barriers and opportunities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Angiosperm nucellar cells can either use or avoid meiosis in vivo, depending on the developmental context. This unique ability contrasts with the conditions required in vitro, either for a reconstituted oocyte to avoid meiosis and produce clones by ...

A Super‐Pangenome for Cultivated Citrus Reveals Evolutive Features During the Allopatric Phase of Their Reticulate Evolution

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Structure of the cultivated citrus super‐pangenome. ABSTRACT The main genetic diversity observed in cultivated citrus results from a reticulate evolution involving four ancestral taxa whose radiation occurred in allopatry. In such context, GWAS analysis, genome diversity and transcriptomic studies will be significantly enhanced through pangenome ...
