Survive, Revive, Thrive: Chapter 9: Apparent Horizon
Journal of Petroleum Technology, 2021The definition of apparent horizon: the plane or line where the earth or water and sky seem to meet. If you do nothing, you get nothing.—Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese politician/diplomat/author, 1945 You get a lot of advice in this job.

Apparent motion can survive binocular rivalry suppression
Vision Research, 1991For short-range motion, observers dichoptically viewed a random-dot cinematogram and a rival target. Upon keypress, the first frame of the cinematogram was replaced by the second frame. Observers judged the direction of motion, which was governed by the initial position of the central region.

Apparent Survival of Woodpeckers and Nuthatches in Wisconsin
Northeastern Naturalist, 2014Few annual survival and capture-probability estimates exist for sittid and picid species common in North America. We used a mark—recapture study and robust design analysis in Program MARK to estimate annual survival rates based on a sample of 51 Sitta carolinensis (White-breasted Nuthatch), 12 Picoides pubescens (Downy Woodpecker), and 15 Picoides ...

Effects of an inconstant blood volume on apparent erythrocyte survival
The International Journal of Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 1968Abstract During erythrocyte-survival studies the assumption is usually made that the erythrocyte volume is not changing (that new erthrocytes are entering the circulation to replace those destroyed). When this is not valid, artificially altered survival curves will result.

Fulminant, Undetected Candida Sepsis After an Apparently Survivable Burn Injury
Journal of Burn Care & Research, 2009We report a 20-year-old male who suffered smoke inhalation injury and burns covering 26% of his TBSA, including his face, dorsal chest, and both the arms. The Abbreviated Burn Severity Index was 5 (likelihood of survival 95%). He underwent burn surgery, requiring massive transfusion.

Breeding Success Affects the Apparent Survival of Grassland Passerines
Biology Bulletin, 2017The apparent adult survival rate is one of the key population parameters of migratory birds. The widely used Cormack–Jolly–Seber capture–mark–recapture model has a number of disadvantages, the main one of which is the impossibility of discerning mortality and permanent emigration.

Natal Philopatry and Apparent Survival of Juvenile Semipalmated Plovers
The Wilson Journal of Ornithology, 2010Abstract Natal philopatry is rare in long-distance migrant shorebirds and requires long-term population studies to detect. We report on the rate of natal philopatry from a 18-year study of Semipalmated Plovers (Charadrius semipalmatus) marked as hatchlings to an arctic breeding site near Churchill, Manitoba.

APPARENT SURVIVAL OF MALE OVENBIRDS IN FRAGMENTED AND FORESTED BOREAL LANDSCAPES
Ecology, 2002From 1996 to 1999, apparent annual survival of male Ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapillus) was compared in forest fragments created by forestry (n = 3) and agriculture (n = 14) to plots in continuous boreal forest of central Saskatchewan (n = 3). For 398 male Ovenbirds, Cormack-Jolly-Seber models indicated that apparent annual survival was lower (34%) in ...

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation of apparently stillborn infants: Survival and long-term outcome
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1991To determine the outcome of apparently stillborn infants who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation, we studied the short- and long-term outcome of 93 infants who had an Apgar score of 0 at 1 minute of age and were resuscitated at birth. Sixty-two (66.6%) responded and left the delivery room alive; 26 (42%) of the 62 infants died in the neonatal period

Colonial breeding birds show greater annual adult apparent survival globally
Ibis, 2022Colonial breeding is a common breeding system in many avian species. Its ubiquity suggests that in the evolutionary past various benefits associated with colonial breeding often outweighed the potential costs. I have investigated the association between one fitness component, namely annual adult survival, and colonial breeding.
