Conserved Mechanisms, Novel Anatomies: The Developmental Basis of Fin Evolution and the Origin of Limbs

open access: yesDiversity, 2021
The transformation of paired fins into tetrapod limbs is one of the most intensively scrutinized events in animal evolution. Early anatomical and embryological datasets identified distinctive morphological regions within the appendage and posed ...

Linear dynamic modeling of spacecraft with various flexible appendages and on-board angular momentums [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We present here a method and some tools developed to build linear models of multi-body systems for space applications (typically satellites). The multi-body system is composed of a main body (hub) fitted with rigid and flexible appendages (solar panels ...

Unraveling LINE‐1 retrotransposition in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The novel RetroTest method allows the detection of L1 activation in clinical samples with low DNA input, providing global L1 activity and the identification of the L1 source element. We applied RetroTest to a real‐world cohort of HNSCC patients where we reported an early L1 activation, with more than 60% of T1 patients showing L1 activity.

On subcellular distribution of the zinc finger 469 protein (ZNF469) and observed discrepancy in the localization of endogenous and overexpressed ZNF469

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ZNF469 regulates the expression of genes encoding extracellular matrix proteins. Endogenous ZNF469 is predominantly cytoplasmic, while in transfected cells, it forms aggregates reminiscent of biomolecular condensates, located mainly in the nucleus. These condensates exhibit overlapping staining with proteasomes and are also associated with the mitotic ...

Strangulation and Necrosis of an Epiploic Appendage of the Sigmoid Colon in a Right Inguinal Hernia

open access: yesCase Reports in Surgery, 2013
An epiploic appendage of the sigmoid colon is considered to be an unusual type of inguinal hernia content. The strangulation of a sigmoid colon appendage into a right inguinal hernia is exclusively rare. We present a case of an 81-year-old female patient

fc177, a Minor dec-1 Proprotein, Is Necessary to Prevent Ectopic Aggregation of the Endochorion During Eggshell Assembly in Drosophila [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The Drosophila eggshell is a highly specialized extracellular matrix that forms between the oocyte and the surrounding epithelial follicle cells during late oogenesis.

Boundaries of photosynthesis: adaptations of carbon fixation in extreme environments

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photosynthesis faces challenges from environmental extremes of temperature, pH, and salinity, limiting gas diffusion, modifying membrane fluidity, and destabilizing photochemical and biochemical reactions. Photosynthetic organisms have evolved unique adaptations overcoming these stresses and maintaining their photosynthetic activity.
