Sarcopenia ‘made simple’ and outcomes from emergency laparotomy
CT‐assessed ratio of L3 vertebral body cross‐sectional area to total psoas muscle cross‐sectional area (L3:PM) is a simple yet significant predictor of 30‐, 90‐ and 365‐day mortality in emergency laparotomy patients. This study is the first to describe the association in an Australian population.

Appendectomy to Remember [PDF]
A 29‐year‐old Somali women presented with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, and fever. She had migrated as a refugee from Kenya to Minnesota 14 months before presentation. On physical examination, she had periumbilical and right lower quadrant tenderness with signs of peritoneal irritation such as rebound tenderness.
