Abstract Of 89 appendicectomized women, 44 (49 per cent) had a normal appendix. Those with a histologically normal appendix were found to be psychologically abnormal when the pain was continuous, and in the first half of the menstrual cycle when the pain occurred in a single attack.

All patients were examined when they had recovered from the effects of the operation and while in hospital. There were no refusals. Biographical information was obtained, a brief psychiatric assessment made, a history of the pain syndrome taken and enquires made about aspects of previous health, and previous hospital admissions.

The Morbidity of Appendicectomy
Scottish Medical Journal, 1968On the basis of a study of the clinical records of 1,312 patients operated on for possible appendicitis over a 2 year period, morbidity of a potentially serious nature was found to involve between 10 per cent (patients having normal appendices removed) and 75 per cent (patients having perforated appendices removed) of all patients operated on.

One thousand seven hundred subjects, involved in another enquiry, were sent a questionnaire asking about their intake of cereal fibre and other foodstuffs, and whether or not they had had an appendectomy.
