Behavioral tendencies in the Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT) have mostly been assessed using a joystick as a response device. In recent years, other hardware devices such as tablets, smartphones, and computer mice have also been used. However, it remains unclear whether different response devices yield similar results and show comparable psychometric ...

Development of a Virtual Approach–Avoidance Task to Assess Alcohol Cravings
Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, 2015The aim of the present study was to develop a new approach-avoidance task in a virtual environment that could be used to assess the response to virtual alcohol-related situations by heavy social drinkers (HSDs) and light social drinkers (LSDs). Thirty-six male undergraduates (18 HSDs, 18 LSDs) responded to signals when they pulled or pushed a joystick ...

A Preliminary Evaluation of Transferring the Approach Avoidance Task into Virtual Reality
International Conference on Information Technologies in Biomedicine, 2019Following our previous study, a new demonstrator was developed, which transfers the Approach Avoidance Task (AAT) into virtual reality (VR) to support the therapy of substance dependency diseases. This was done in consideration of past evaluation results in order to further increase the effectiveness of the training, for instance by improving usability,

Previous research has shown that approaching a stimulus makes it more positive, while avoiding a stimulus makes it more negative. The present research demonstrates that approach-avoidance behaviors have the potential to charge stimulus attributes such as color with evaluative meaning. This evaluation carries over to other stimuli with that feature.

The approach-avoidance task as an online intervention in cigarette smoking: a pilot study.
Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, 2015Dual-process models posit that addictive behaviors are characterized by strong automatic processes that can be assessed with implicit measures. The present study investigated the potential of a cognitive bias modification paradigm, the Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT), for retraining automatic behavioral tendencies in cigarette smoking. The study was set ...
