Au Mexique, les taux élevés de déforestation et de dégradation forestière chez les communautés rurales augmentent la pauvreté et l’exode rural vers les villes et les pays étrangers. Les forêts de l’État de Hidalgo présentent une dégradation comparable à celle de nombreux autres États mexicains.
