Is It Approximate Computing or Malicious Computing?

Proceedings of the 2020 on Great Lakes Symposium on VLSI, 2020
Approximate computing (AC) is an attractive energy efficient technique that can be implemented at almost all the design levels including data, algorithm, and hardware. The basic idea behind AC is to deliberately control the trade-off between computation accuracy and energy efficiency.

Approximate computing for unreliable silicon

2016 International Conference on Design and Technology of Integrated Systems in Nanoscale Era (DTIS), 2016
Approximate Computing is frequently mentioned as a new computing paradigm that enables improving energy efficiency at the expense of quality. But what is Approximate Computing? How can it be used in a truly innovative way that goes beyond reducing precision or approximating complex operations or algorithms at the expense of accuracy as it is already ...

On Approximate Computer System Models

Journal of the ACM, 1975
A new treatment of the boundary conditions of diffusion approximations for interconnected queueing systems is presented. The results have applications to the study of the performance of multiple-resource computer systems. In this approximation method, additional equations to represent the behavior of the queues when they are empty are introduced.

Error correction for approximate computing

2016 54th Annual Allerton Conference on Communication, Control, and Computing (Allerton), 2016
Approximate computing, which sacrifices the accuracy during computation, is a promising technology to save energy. However, large number of computation errors may violate the accuracy requirement of certain applications and should be corrected. Consider a Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) with multiple Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs), where some of these
