Fast computation of sample entropy and approximate entropy in biomedicine
Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine, 2011Both sample entropy and approximate entropy are measurements of complexity. The two methods have received a great deal of attention in the last few years, and have been successfully verified and applied to biomedical applications and many others. However, the algorithms proposed in the literature require O(N(2)) execution time, which is not fast enough

Approximate entropy for testing randomness
This paper arose from interest in assessing the quality of random number generators. The problem of testing randomness of a string of binary bits produced by such a generator gained importance with the wide use of public key cryptography and the need for secure encryption algorithms.

The complexity of approximating the entropy
Proceedings 17th IEEE Annual Conference on Computational Complexity, 2003Summary: We consider the problem of approximating the entropy of a discrete distribution under several different models of oracle access to the distribution. In the evaluation oracle model, the algorithm is given access to the explicit array of probabilities specifying the distribution.

The complexity of approximating entropy
Proceedings of the thiry-fourth annual ACM symposium on Theory of computing - STOC '02, 2002(MATH) We consider the problem of approximating the entropy of a discrete distribution under several models. If the distribution is given explicitly as an array where the i-th location is the probability of the i-th element, then linear time is both necessary and sufficient for approximating the entropy. We consider a model in which the algorithm is ...

Approximate determination of the distribution of entropy
Automatic Control and Computer Sciences, 2010Contrary to the popular in the technical literature quantitative representation of entropy as a measure of the uncertainty of the occurrence of random events, its estimation is proposed based on the density and probability distribution functions. Constructing them using approximation methods is shown.

Hypothermia and the Approximate Entropy of the Electroencephalogram
Anesthesiology, 2003Background The electroencephalogram is commonly used to monitor the brain during hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass and circulatory arrest. No quantitative relationship between the electroencephalogram and temperature has been elucidated, even though the qualitative changes are well known.

Approximate entropy for all signals
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, 2009Calculation of approximate entropy (ApEn) requires a priori determination of two unknown parameters, m and r. While the recommended values of r, in the range of 0.1¿0.2 times the standard deviation of the signal, have been shown to be applicable for a wide variety of signals, in certain cases, r values within this prescribed range can lead to an ...
