An Approximation Theorem

Grundlehren Der Mathematischen Wissenschaften in Einzeldarstellungen Mit Besonderer Berücksichtigung Der Anwendungsgebiete, 1996
This chapter, and part of the next, are devoted to a result which can be viewed either as an approximation theorem, or as a theorem characterizing the kernel of a trace operator for arbitrary sets. In the present chapter we treat the case of Sobolev spaces W m,p (R N ) for integer m and 1 < p < ∞.

Approximating classical theorems

Journal of Logic and Computation, 1998
Approximation of classical theorems by constructive ones is considered. (By constructive proofs the authors understand those proofs that do not use the Excluded Middle principle.) The paper develops some ideas of G. Kreisel, P. S. Novikov and T. Coquand.

On the Dixmier Approximation Theorem

Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, 1984
For a self-adjoint element A of a von Neumann algebra \({\mathcal R}\) let co(A) denote the convex hull of \(\{UAU^*| U\) unitary in \({\mathcal R}\}\). Let further \(co(A)^-\) and \(co(A)^ =\) be the weak and the norm closure of co(A), respectively.

Approximation Theorems of Analysis

1999
This is an expository article about Dirac families. Applications include the theorem of Weierstrass on polynomial approximations of continuous functions, the result of Fejér-Cesàro on Fourier series, harmonic functions and Poisson families, and finally, solutions of the heat equation.

Approximately Axisymmetric Antidynamo Theorems

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 2018
The validity of the well-known Cowling's theorem, that an axially symmetric MHD dynamo cannot exist in an electrically conducting fluid, is studied by the author for small scale deviations from strict axial symmetry. It is shown that the theorem can be extended as to include weakly non-axisymmetric configurations under the derived new symmetry ...
