Environmental DNA reveals that rivers are conveyer belts of biodiversity information
DNA of a given organism can be detected from its surroundings. Here, Deiner and colleagues use so-called environmental DNA to estimate biodiversity of both aquatic and terrestrial organisms in and near river.

To understand mating-system evolution in self-compatible hermaphrodites, variation in selfing rates is highly relevant. Empirical studies are rarely designed to capture variation between individuals, instead often comparing species and populations.

This study systematically compares the degradation efficiency of CIP in a H2O2‐alone system and a novel Bi12FeO20‐H2O2 photo‐Fenton system. It reveals for the first time the presence of a quinone‐imine intermediate in the H2O2‐alone system, which exhibits toxicity comparable to CIP.

Ancient hybridization fuels rapid cichlid fish adaptive radiations
Cichlids underwent a rapid diversification in the Lake Victoria region, expanding to more than 700 species within 150,000 years. Here, Meier and colleagues show that an ancient hybridization between two divergent cichlid lineages generated high genetic ...

FABM-PCLake – linking aquatic ecology with hydrodynamics [PDF]
Abstract. This study presents FABM-PCLake, a redesigned structure of the PCLake aquatic ecosystem model, which we implemented in the Framework for Aquatic Biogeochemical Models (FABM). In contrast to the original model, which was designed for temperate, fully mixed freshwater lakes, the new FABM-PCLake represents an integrated aquatic ecosystem model ...

Advanced Dental Composite Technology via Bisilanized Dual‐Action Nanofillers for Biofilm Control
A multimodal research strategy has led to the development of an innovative resin‐based composite (RBC) with dual antibacterial action. The S_CM‐RBC formula showed strong antibiofilm activity, excellent mechanical strength, and biosafety. It effectively controlled oral bacteria in prevention of caries recurrence, and maintained pulp health in a rat ...

General principles for assignments of communities from eDNA: Open versus closed taxonomic databases
Metabarcoding of environmental DNA (eDNA) is a powerful tool for describing biodiversity, such as finding keystone species or detecting invasive species in environmental samples.

A biohybrid nanorobot integrating lytic bacteriophage N4 with Pd nanozymes is developed for targeted eradication of multidrug‐resistant E. coli biofilms. Synergistic bacterial lysis and ROS‐mediated oxidation enable simultaneous biofilm removal and antibiotic resistance genes degradation, maintaining high efficacy in complex wastewater environments ...
