Demonstration of free fatty acids in the integument of semi-aquatic and aquatic mammals

Acta Histochemica, 2012
The sensitive red fluorescence dye BODIPY® 665/676, and embedding in the water-soluble resin Technovit® 7100 were used to demonstrate free fatty acids in the epidermis of seven semi-aquatic and aquatic mammalian species with a sparse or dense hair coat.

Method for communicating with aquatic mammals

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1982
A phonetic alphabet for communicating with dolphins, porpoises and whales includes three basic geometric shapes, various combinations of which are used to represent speech sounds. The alphabet consists of eighteen symbols which may be understood by animals trained to identify these symbols with words by using their innate echolocation sensory ...

The aquatic mammals and reptiles of the Amazon

1984
The vast river systems, flooded forests and floodplains of the Amazon have provided the necessary ecological conditions for the evolution of an interesting and extremely diverse aquatic fauna. The magnitude of which is implied by the 2000 fish species (Roberts 1972).

Somatic Sense in Aquatic Mammals

2001
Somatic sense in cetaceans did not attract as much attention of investigators as the auditory and visual ones. So available data in this field are restricted. Morphological studies have shown the presence of both incapsulated and free nerve endings in the dolphin’s skin, especially numerous at the head and snout, around the blowhole, and around the ...

Nematodes Transmitted to Man by Fish and Aquatic Mammals

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1970
Zoonotic nematodes may cause disease in man through migrating larva (larva migrans), through direct infection or possibly through allergic responses. The parasitic genera Ancylostoma, Uncinaria, Bunostomum and Toxocara can cause larva migrans. The cod worm (Phocanema decipiens) a parasite found in fish and seals, can infect man, as can Anisakis ...
