Aqueous Flow Batteries: Research and Development
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2018AbstractFlow batteries (FBs) have become a central topic recently, due to their promising prospect of addressing the issues of the random and intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. However, the successful industrialization of current FB systems is still limited by their relatively low energy densities and high cost.

Rechargeable Aqueous Mn Metal Battery Enabled by Inorganic-Organic Interfaces.
Angewandte Chemie, 2022Aqueous batteries that use metal anodes exhibit maximum anodic capacity, whereas the energy density is still unsatisfactory partially due to the high redox potential of metal anode.

An All-Organic Aqueous Battery Powered by Adsorbed Quinone.
ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 2019The need for cost-effective, safe energy storage has led to unprecedentedly complex designs of materials and structures to meet stringent requirements. Yet, it remains a question whether we can eventually afford the manufacturing of these new materials ...

A Solid Sulfur Cathode for Aqueous Batteries
Science, 1993Because of its high resistivity and subsequent low electroactivity, sulfur is not normally considered a room-temperature battery cathode. An elemental sulfur cathode has been made with a measured capacity of over 900 ampere⋅hours per kilogram, more than 90 percent of the theoretical storage capacity of solid sulfur at room temperature ...

Aqueous Batteries Operated at −50 °C
Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2019AbstractInsufficient ionic conductivity and freezing of the electrolyte are considered the main problems for electrochemical energy storage at low temperatures (low T). Here, an electrolyte with a freezing point lower than −130 °C is developed by using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an additive with molar fraction of 0.3 to an aqueous solution of 2 m ...

Proton-Assisted Aqueous Manganese-Ion Battery Chemistry.
Angewandte Chemie, 2022Aqueous manganese-ion batteries (MIBs) are promising energy storage systems because of the distinctive merits of Mn metal, in terms of high abundance, low cost, nontoxicity, high theoretical capacity and low redox potential.

Despite the growing interest in advanced lithium batteries, the overwhelming majority of batteries manufactured today are still based on aqueous electrolytes, mostly sulphuric acid or potassium hydroxide solution. The ubiquitous lead acid battery is, after 150 years, still being improved as regards its design and materials of construction. Rechargeable

We begin this chapter with a brief review of design improvements aimed at making batteries more abuse resistant and safe for users, and we then discuss some of the safety precautions that users need to take to prevent accidents. With few exceptions, most of the design improvements we mention have already been incorporated into batteries where necessary.
