The significance of microbiota in New Zealand seaweed aquaculture

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 59, Issue 3, Page 509-536, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Seaweed‐associated microbes are the metabolic heavy lifters in the symbiotic relationship between the seaweed microbiome and their host macroalgae. In exchange for fixed carbon and an exclusive niche habitat offered by the host, the microbial consort performs a litany of crucial metabolic functions including vitamin production, nitrogen ...

Image_4_Carapace microbiota in American lobsters (Homarus americanus) associated with epizootic shell disease and the green gland.JPEG

open access: yes, 2023
Epizootic Shell Disease (ESD) has posed a great threat, both ecologically and economically, to the American lobster population of Long Island Sound since its emergence in the late 1990s.

Year‐Round Quantification, Structure and Dynamics of Epibacterial Communities From Diverse Macroalgae Reveal a Persistent Core Microbiota and Strong Host Specificities

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 2, April 2025.
We conducted a year‐long monthly epimicrobiota sampling on five algal species inhabiting an English Channel rocky shore, combining qPCR measurements of 16S rRNA gene copies with amplicon metabarcoding. Algal host emerged as the primary driver of epibacterial community composition, before seasonality.

Discovery of Lacto‐N‐Biosidases and a Novel N‐Acetyllactosaminidase Activity in the CAZy Family GH20: Functional Diversity and Structural Insights

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 26, Issue 2, January 14, 2025.
We report several new lacto‐N‐biosidases (LNBases) and the first report of N‐acetyllactosaminidase (LacNAcase) activity in CAZy family GH20, i. e. enzymes that catalyze the release heterodisaccharides from human milk oligosaccharides and related glycans. New crystal structures comparing a specific LNBase to an enzyme with dual LacNAcase/LNBase activity

Aquimarina algiphila sp. nov., a chitin degrading bacterium isolated from the red alga Tichocarpus crinitus

open access: yes, 2018
A strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile by gliding and yellow-orange pigmented flavobacterium, designated strain 9Alg 151T, was isolated from the Pacific red alga Tichocarpus crinitus.

Low microbial abundance and community diversity in the egg capsule of the oviparous cloudy catshark (Scyliorhinus torazame) during oviposition

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2024.
This research reveals that embryos of the oviparous cloudy catshark (Scyliorhinus torazame) acquire pathogen resistance by Stage 30. The intracapsular environment of freshly laid eggs exhibits low microbial abundance and diversity. This clean environment persists until the early opening of the capsule, suggesting its critical role in protecting ...

Diversity of marine bacteria growing on leachates from virgin and weathered plastic: Insights into potential degraders

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 3, June 2024.
Plastic degradation in the ocean leads to the release of chemical compounds that can be toxic to marine fauna. In this work, using a combination of BONCAT, CARD‐FISH, and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we study the marine bacterial taxa that could potentially degrade such plastic leachates.

Tail Fan Necrosis syndrome in decapod crustaceans: A review

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 47, Issue 5, May 2024.
Abstract Lobsters and crayfish in Australasia can develop a condition known as Tail Fan Necrosis (TFN syndrome). Many attempts have been made to find a primary pathogen or link the syndrome to commercial activities, but a solution remains elusive. TFN syndrome is a ‘wicked problem’, a problem difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete and ...
