Mitochondrial Markers COI and 16S rRNA for the Molecular Identification of Parrots and Macaws Recovered From Illegal Trafficking in Three Areas of Colombia [PDF]

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We molecularly characterized parrots (Amazona spp.) and macaws (Ara spp.) rescued from illegal trafficking in Colombia using two mitochondrial markers (COI and 16S rRNA). The COI gene showed high resolution for species identification and revealed considerable intraspecific diversity, while 16S rRNA displayed limited taxonomic resolution.

Occurrence and Molecular Characterization of Alphaherpesvirus in Psittacines in the State of Mato Grosso [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine International, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily belongs to the Orthoherpesviridae family, whose viruses are characterized by rapid replication and the ability to establish latent infection in host cells. These viruses cause important avian diseases such as Marek’s disease, infectious laryngotracheitis, and Pacheco’s disease (PD) in psittacines. In Brazilian avifauna,

Mitochondrial markers (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S ribosomal RNA) as supporting biomarkers for wild bird identification [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary World
Background and Aim: Illegal wildlife trafficking is a critical threat to biodiversity, particularly in megadiverse countries such as Colombia. Birds, notably psittacines, are among the most targeted taxa.

Pityriasis Versicolor in a Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) [PDF]

open access: yesCase Reports in Veterinary Medicine, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
A 20‐year‐old southern ground hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) developed hyperpigmented macules on its gular pouch, resembling the lesions typically seen in humans with pityriasis versicolor. Cytologic examination revealed over 100 budding yeasts per oil immersion field.
