Thirteen pathologically documented intrasellar arachnoid cysts treated by transsphenoidal cyst excision and marsupialization were analyzed. Presenting symptoms included headache (7), visual loss (7), galactorrhea (4), and anterior pituitary dysfunction (2). Postoperatively, the 7 patients with visual loss and 4 with hyperprolactinemia improved.

Infratentorial arachnoid cysts
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1973✓ A series of 20 cases of arachnoid cysts in the posterior fossa is reported. Classification was made according to the location of the cysts. Accurate clinical localization was only possible with cysts in the cerebellopontine angle. Ventriculography and pneumoencephalography were the most helpful investigations for making the diagnosis.

Arachnoid cysts are fluid-filled duplications or splittings of the arachnoid layer with a content which is similar but not equal to the cerebrospinal fluid. Arachnoid cysts are not actual neurodegenerative disorders, rather the underlying defect of the texture of the arachnoid layer is probably congenital in nature.
