Aragonite in fossils

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B. Biological Sciences, 1967
Abstract The distribution of aragonite in the skeletal parts of living organisms is reviewed, and its distribution in fossils is described on the basis of several hundred new determinations. Aragonitic fossils are extensively preserved in Tertiary sediments, and are common in Mesozoic rocks, particularly where the enclosing lithology ...

Aragonite cycles: diagenesis caught in the act

Sedimentology, 2006
AbstractOrganic biomarker and nannofossil assemblages are used in combination with sedimentary petrology to identify the role of diagenesis for the formation of a rhythmic calcareous succession. A record from the Early Pliocene of the Maldives (Ocean Drilling Program, ODP Leg 115) is presented containing precession and eccentricity cycles expressed as ...

Strontianite in Coral Skeletal Aragonite

Science, 1997
An x-ray spectroscopic study of scleractinian coral skeletons indicated that, although some strontium substitutes for calcium in the aragonite structure, at concentrations of about 7500 parts per million, as much as 40 percent of the strontium resides in strontianite (SrCO 3 ).

Aragonite in the Resilium of Oysters

Science, 1962
Aragonite (orthorhombic CaCO 3 ) composes some of the fibers of the resilium of Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin).

The structure of aragonite

Mineralogical Magazine and Journal of the Mineralogical Society, 1925
We are unable to observe crystalline structure directly, and can only infer it by observation of the physical and chemical properties possessed by a crystal. It is quite reasonable to suppose that every vectorial property possessed by a crystal is dependent upon its leptonic structure. The X-ray method, which has produced such a revolutionary change in

Catalysis, Inhibition, and the Calcite-Aragonite Problem; [Part] 2, the Vaterite-Aragonite Transformation

American Journal of Science, 1968
The kinetics of the vaterite-aragonite transformation in aqueous solution were studied to determine the factors involved in aragonite formation. The reaction involved the solution and equilibration of vaterite and subsequent nucleation and growth of aragonite. Extent of reaction was monitored by time-lapse photography.

Pure aragonite synthesis

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1962
By slow removal of CO/sub 2/ from Ca(HCO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ soluti on containing MgCl/sub 2/ at room temperature, pure and homogeneous aragonite crystals were obtained. During the crystal syntheses, labeling with either or both C/sup 14/ and Ca/sup 45/ was feasible. (auth)

Monoclinc aragonite, the precursor of metastable aragonite formation

2019
Aragonite is a wide-spread crystalline form of CaCO3 on the Earth surface. Although calcite is the thermodynamically stable CaCO3 form at ambient conditions, aragonite precipitates in the ocean and in some continental settings. It is abundant in the shells of various organisms such as molluscs and corals as well as in stromatolites, and its abiotic ...

Preparation of Aragonite Whiskers

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1995
A simple synthetic method for preparing aragonite whiskers has been developed. A suspension of CaCl 2 ‐MgCl 2 ‐Mg(OH) 2 with pH ∼9 has been prepared by adding Ca(OH)

Thermoluminescence and radioluminescence in aragonite

Mineralogy and Petrology, 1988
Thermoluminescence (TL) and radioluminescence (RL) wavelength spectra of aragonite have been investigated. Despite the different origin of the samples used, a number of common luminescence features emerges. The spectra for TL peaks appearing near 50, 70 and 170 K are identical with a prominent and broad band centered near 400 nm.
