Diversity of predaceous arthropods in the almond tree canopy in Northeastern Portugal: a methodological approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The almond tree is an economically important crop in Mediterranean regions. However, knowledge about the biodiversity of natural enemies that may be useful as biocontrol agents, is scarce.

Winter Temperature Affects Fatty Acid Composition and Gene Expression, but Not Fat Content and Survival in a Northern Population of a Range‐Expanding Spider

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
This study provides insight into the performance of a range‐expanding species and the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying thermal tolerance at its expanding edge. ABSTRACT Species expand their geographic distribution when environmental conditions are favorable or when mutations arise that allow them to live in previously unfavorable ...

Description of the male of Hypognatha belem (Araneae, Araneidae)

open access: yesIheringia: Série Zoologia, 2002
The male of Hypognatha belem Levi, 1996 is described and illustrated for the first time. New records expand the distribution range of the species to northeastern and southeastern Brazil.

More on Cladomelea longipes (Araneae: Araneidae)

open access: yes, 2021
The bolas spider Cladomelea longipes (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1877) has a wide distribution in Africa, and is known from Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe and South Africa. In this paper we report on new information on their mating, feeding and egg cocoon construction.

Diversity, composition and phenology of araneid orb-weavers (Araneae, Araneidae) associated with riparian forests in southern Brazil

open access: yesIheringia: Série Zoologia, 2015
The Araneidae is a speciose family including web-spinning spiders that are very abundant in various terrestrial ecosystems. Several studies demonstrate that changes in vegetation surrounding rivers, streams and brooks affect the associated araneofauna ...

Special Adaptations of Orb Weavers and Prey [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Orb weaving spiders have devised both webs and special devices for capturing prey. The prey have also evolved mechanisms for eluding spiders and for living with them.

Testing for Differences in Consumer‐Based Nutrient Cycling Between Male and Female Wolf Spiders (Hogna carolinensis)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
We tested whether male and female wolf spiders (Hogna carolinensis) differ in how they regulate and excrete micronutrients. Our ecological experiment revealed significant differences in whole‐body and excreta elemental composition between sexes, providing new insight into how predator physiology shapes predator‐mediated nutrient cycles.

Ecosystem services provided by spiders

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 6, Page 2217-2236, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Spiders, ubiquitous and abundant predators in terrestrial ecosystems, often are the subjects of an unjust negative perception. However, these remarkable creatures stand as unsung heroes within our ecosystems, contributing a multitude of ecosystem services critical to human well‐being.

Assessment of biodiversity and seasonal dynamics of spiders in maize crops of Punjab, Pakistan

open access: yesJournal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity
Spiders contribute significantly to natural pest control in agriculture. Here, we investigated the biodiversity, population dynamics and predatory activities of spiders in the maize-growing districts (Kasur and Lahore) of Punjab, Pakistan during 2018 ...
