A First Inventory of the Lichens of Mangaia, and an Updated Checklist for the Cook Islands

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Botany, Volume 64, Issue 1, March 2026.
A first checklist is provided for the lichenised fungi of Mangaia. Based on field work undertaken during November 2024, when 144 collections were made over a 5‐day period, 66 species are recognised from Mangaia, including 43 new national records for the Cook Islands. A number of the new records reported here for Mangaia are first reports for islands of

The Cinderella tree, Quillaja saponaria – A soap story

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 2, Page 439-451, March 2026.
Our current understanding of plants has been shaped by the entwining of different cultures. The Chilean soapbark tree, traditionally valued as a source of natural soap, was shown by serendipitous research in France in the 1900s to produce compounds that can boost the immune response to vaccines.

Effects of Pyrolysis Control Parameters on the Structural Properties of Biomass‐Derived Activated Carbon Materials and Their Energy Applications

open access: yesThe Chemical Record, Volume 26, Issue 3, March 2026.
Tubular pyrolysis synthesis is a widespread method to produce activated carbons (ACs). This review focuses on the different controlling parameters of the tubular pyrolysis synthesis method and their influence on the performance of synthesized ACs, thereby considering both experimental aspects and the use of plant‐based biomasses (PBBs) as feedstock ...
