Similar climate–growth relationships but divergent drought resilience strategies in coexisting Mediterranean shrubs

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 8, Page 1804-1817, August 2024.
These results highlight the importance of drought as a driver of growth in Mediterranean scrublands. Growth resilience strategies differed between species with junipers being less resilient to drought than other coexisting shrubs. Further research should investigate how this difference in post‐drought resilience is related to functional traits ...

Range‐wide intraspecific variation reflects past adaptation to climate in a gypsophile Mediterranean shrub

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 7, Page 1533-1549, July 2024.
Despite strong specialization to gypsum soils, past divergent selection related to climatic gradients has driven adaptive population differentiation in Lepidium subulatum. All populations showed high but similar plasticity to drought, indicating that selection did not act against plasticity in harsh environmental conditions.

Pushing the limits of C3 intrinsic water use efficiency in Mediterranean semiarid steppes: Responses of a drought‐avoider perennial grass to climate aridification

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 955-966, April 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) reflects the trade‐off between photosynthetic carbon gain and water loss through stomatal conductance and is key for understanding dryland plant responses to climate change.

“El uso de árboles multipropósito como alternativa para la producción animal sostenible” “El uso de árboles multipropósito como alternativa para la producción animal sostenible”

open access: yesTecnología en Marcha, 2013
El silvopastoreo es un sistema de producción pecuaria en donde las leñosas perennes (árboles y/o arbustos) interactúan con los componentes tradicionales (forrajeras herbáceas y animales) bajo un sistema de manejo integral, ha sido planteado, con base en ...

Wildlife mortality risk posed by high and low traffic roads

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 2, April 2024.
Abstract Wildlife mortality due to collisions with vehicles (roadkill) is one of the predominant negative effects exerted by roads on many wildlife species. Reducing roadkill is therefore a major component of wildlife conservation. Roadkill is affected by various factors, including road attributes and traffic volume.

Large‐scale facilitative effects for a single nurse shrub: Impact of the rainfall gradient, plant community and distribution across a geographical barrier

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 2, Page 233-245, February 2024.
The effect of a single key shrub that acts as a nurse species is dependent on its distribution range. The co‐inhabiting plant communities and the environment of the distribution range, exemplified in this study through the rainfall gradients, shape the final effect of the shrub.

La Lista de nombres vulgares y botánicos de árboles y arbustos propicios para repoblar los bosques de la República de Fernando Altamirano y José Ramírez a más de 110 años de su publicación The List of common and botanical names of trees and shrubs suitable for restoration of the woods of the Republic by Fernando Altamirano and José Ramírez, more than 110 years after its publication
