Arc characteristics applying to flashing on commutators

Electrical Engineering, 1937
This paper gives the results of experimental investigations relating to arc characteristics as they apply in commutator flashing. A knowledge of these characteristics is necessary for the application of the theory outlined in a previous paper1 on flashing of commutators by the same author, as well as for the investigation of flashing due to other ...

Recovery characteristics of vacuum arcs

IEEE Transactions on Communication and Electronics, 1963
A study has been made of the breakdown and recovery strength characteristics of experimental vacuum interrupters incorporating a variety of contact materials. Our data show that much of the breakdown strength for these devices is gained in less than a 1/8-inch gap length.

Characteristics of a transferred‐arc plasma

AIChE Journal, 1983
AbstractThe basic characteristics of a transferred arc argon plasma were determined using a cathode assembly suitable for transferring the electric arc to a molten metal bath or to a cooled anode. They indicated that the sustained voltage depended strongly on the arc length and much less on current.

Vacuum arc and characteristics of arc voltage in curved surface contact

2016 27th International Symposium on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum (ISDEIV), 2016
In this paper, we proposed two novel contact structures for vacuum interrupter. The sine surface contacts (sin-ruled surface contact and sin-revolution surface contact) were experimental studied in the condition of 3mm opening gap. Experiments were carried out in the oscillating circuit with the contact diameter being 40mm, the anode contact material ...

Minimal length arc characteristics

Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1924
Abstract 1. (1) Evidence is presented that the discharge occurring between separating electrodes is, for large currents, an arc; for small currents, an atmospheric spark. 2. (2) A method for isolating the arc discharge for study is described. 3. (3) Arc characteristics for arcs of extremely short length have been experimentally obtained.

Characteristics of non-thermal AC arcs in multi-arc generator*

Chinese Physics B, 2019
To obtain large-volume non-thermal arc plasma (NTAP), a multiple NTAP generator with three pairs of electrodes has been developed. The arc plasma characteristics, including dynamic process, spatial distribution, and rotation velocity in the discharge zone, were investigated by high speed photograph and image processing methods.

Correlation of the characteristics of electric arcs

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1969
Similarity theory is used to derive non-dimensional numbers for the correlation of electric arc characteristics. The non-dimensional numbers for the correlation of arc velocity and voltage-current characteristics of different types of arc are obtained. Examples are given in order to show how to use the correlation method in practice.

Characteristics of the arc in “Heliarc” welding

Electrical Engineering, 1949
Two distinctly different properties of an electric arc in an atmosphere of inert gas — a cleaning action of the arc when d-c reverse polarity is used on oxide-forming metals, and the resistance to current flow which is considerably higher when the electrode is positive — are described showing their effect on the application of the “Heliarc” welding ...

Estimation of Arc voltage characteristic for high current fault Arcs

2017 International Conference on Smart grids, Power and Advanced Control Engineering (ICSPACE), 2017
Generally, arc models are used to study the behaviour of the electric arc and its interaction with the circuit. Precise simulation of fault current arc has very important role in performing arc flash calculations for short circuit test and arc test on different electrical equipment and also for fault analysis in power system studies.

Arc characteristics and metal transfer modes in arcing-wire gas tungsten arc welding

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2015
Arcing-wire gas tungsten arc welding is an innovative process developed as a variant of gas tungsten arc welding to reinforce the deposition rate by utilizing bypass arc energy. After establishing an experimental platform, the experiments were conducted to study the arc characteristics, interaction of the main and bypass arcs, and metal transfer ...
