Cathode Sputtering in Arc Discharges

Physics, 1936
A method is described for measuring the number of atoms of thorium sputtered from tungsten by positive ions of various velocities in the positive column of an arc discharge. The threshold for mercury ions is 35 volts. The number of atoms sputtered per positive ion in mercury vapor increases with increase in filament temperature and with decrease in arc

Excitation in a Transient Arc Discharge†

Journal of Electronics and Control, 1960
ABSTRACT The intensity ratio of two copper emission lines was measured as a function of time for a transient arc in free air, using two photormultipliers simultaneously. The results are compatible with the thermal nature of the high-pressure arc, but indicate that for temperature measurement the usual assumption of Boltzmann populations may not be ...

Spectrographic Measurements on an Arc Discharge

Journal of Applied Physics, 1967
An arc discharge of 60-μsec duration and peak current of 2×104 A in an initial pressure of 3 Torr of helium was studied spectroscopically. Time resolution was obtained by Kerr cell shuttering a 1.5-m spectrograph. The spectra were analyzed by Stark broadening and line-to-line intensity ratios.

The impulse initiation of arc discharges

Proceedings of the IEE Part A: Power Engineering, 1959
An analysis is made of discharge characteristics when arc initiationis just possible, and effects due to electrode material, shape and surface condition are studied. After the energy associated with the initial high-voltage pulse has dissipated, the current is shown to be of the order of 0.1 amp. The discbarge is then unstable, and frequent transitions
