Development of Arch Action in Arch Dams
Journal of the Power Division, 1965Considering hydrostatic pressure as the only external load on an arch dam, the influence of the reservoir elevation and the elastic deformability of the foundations is investigated using the crown cantilever method. The arch and cantilever action are evaluated on the basis of a shear and moment criterion, representing the relative magnitude of the ...

A theory for arch dams based on extended shell theory is given and compared with finite-element-shell and three-dimensional (3D) analyses. The dam equations given are solved by successive overrelaxation. In a flexible valley, stress boundary conditions are used. Various loading cases and the pore-water-pressure effect are discussed.
