Functional Appliances and Arch Width

British Journal of Orthodontics, 1992
A retrospective study was undertaken using treated functional appliance cases. The groups involved 27 Andresen, 19 Bionator, and 23 Fränkel cases. The reflex metrograph was used to measure arch width from study models at the start of treatment, end of treatment including retention, and at least 1 year post-treatment.

The effects of Fränkel II treatment on arch width and arch perimeter

American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 1987
Changes in dental arch width and total arch perimeter in 24 Class II, Division 1 patients treated with the Fränkel II appliance were compared with changes in an untreated control group. Measurements were made on pretreatment and posttreatment plaster casts at three points on each of four maxillary and four mandibular teeth.

The relationship of arch length to alterations in dental arch width

American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2000
An accurate method is presented for forecasting alterations in arch length related to various width increases in each dental arch. It is based on combined beta and hyperbolic cosine functions which express the expanded dental arches with correlation coefficients of r = 0.98, between measured data and representations of the dental arch.

Intra-arch widths: A meta-analysis

International Orthodontics, 2013
To determine and compare the mean values of various intra-arch distances in Class I, Class II division 1 and Class II division 2 patients. The search engines PubMed, Embrace and Cochrane were employed to select articles for further study, and the sample thereby selected comprised adult subjects with full permanent dentition, without missing teeth ...

A study of occlusion and arch widths in families

American Journal of Orthodontics, 1980
It is often claimed that occlusal variation ("malocclusion") is under strong genetic control. This study of a large age-standardized series of families (parents and offspring) shows that the genetic contribution to occlusal variation is quite low. On average, only about 10 percent of the variation in overjet, overbite, crowding, tooth rotations, and ...

Maxillary and mandibular arch widths of Colombians

American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2009
This study provides reference data and evaluates the potential of using regression models to predict maxillary and mandibular arch widths.A total of 473 Colombian mestizos, aged 5 to 17 years, with normal occlusions and malocclusions (Class I and Class II Division 1) were evaluated.

Evaluation of mandibular arch width change

The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 1981
The following conclusions can be drawn from this study and observations from the literature: The width of the mandible is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic forces. Maximal opening, protrusion, and biting forces cause the mandible to decrease in arch width.
