CAPITALIZING CRISIS: Urban Extractivism in Athens Amidst Neoliberal Restructurings

Abstract In this article we examine the post‐2009 transformation of Athens through the analytical lens of urban extractivism. We argue that the Greek sovereign debt crisis did not operate as a temporary disruption, but as a durable political condition that enabled the institutionalization of extractive urban governance.

Three excavation seasons at this site (2021–2023) have uncovered a massive building constructed in the late third or early fourth cent.

The Late Agricultural Development of Central Arabian Oases—Archaeobotanical and Archaeozoological Studies of the al‐Kharj Oasis

ABSTRACT While oasis settlements emerged during the Bronze Age in Eastern and Northern Arabia, the settlement process in Central Arabia was different. Excavations at al‐Yamāma—main ancient settlement of the al‐Kharj oasis (Riyadh Province, KSA)—suggest that the latter did not emerge before the second half of the first millennium BCE.

Rise of the south: How Arab‐led maritime trade transformed China, 671–1371 CE

Abstract China's center of socioeconomic activities was in the North prior to the Tang dynasty but is in the South today. We demonstrate that Arab and Persian Muslim traders triggered that transition when they came to China in the late seventh century, by lifting maritime trade along the South Coast and re‐creating the South.
